You can ask God to help you as you navigate parenting, and to turn to Him at every moment.

Prayer For New Parents

A Prayer For Peace

John 14:27

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”

As a new parent, there are so many things that you are still figuring out.

It can be easy to feel anxious or on edge as you maneuver life as a parent.

In those moments of anxiety, you can lean on God for peace. He has left us with His peace.

Not the kind of peace that the world gives, which comes and goes depending on the situation.

But God’s peace, that not only surpasses all understanding. But it also is available to us in every situation.

As you seek Him for peace, He will settle your troubled heart.

Lord,

Thank You for my precious baby. My world has changed for the better with him/her in it.

I am grateful for the moments that I get to simply hold him/her and see that sweet face.

I admit, I find myself feeling on edge and anxious about the smallest things. As a parent, I want to do what is best for my baby.

But I know that anxiety only strips me from being able to be fully present, and peaceful.

I know that my feelings have an effect on the baby.

Please help me to take hold of the peace that You offer.

Fill my heart and mind with Your peace, that I may be able to be steady and calm.

In Jesus’ name, amen.

A Prayer For Sleep

Psalm 4: 8

“In peace I will lie down and sleep,
    for you alone, Lord,
    make me dwell in safety.”

If you were to ask any new parent what one of the biggest changes are that they have experienced, it is most likely sleep depravity.

Many new parents are often weary, and face the challenges of sleeping enough.

As your baby adjusts to life outside the womb, they are still learning new patterns, and you may find them waking up at odd hours of the night.

It can be hard to feel equipped to parent when you are lacking sleep and feeling exhausted.

God knows that we need rest, and we can come to Him in prayer, asking that He grants us rest and opportunities to catch up on our sleep.

Dear God,

I am feeling so weary today.

It has not been easy to get a full night’s rest.

But I know that my baby needs me in those moments when he/she wakes up.

I am thankful that I get to be there for him/her at those times. But at the same time, I admit, I am really needing some rest.

Please help me to find a time during my day when I can sleep.

I know people say it is best to sleep when the baby sleeps.

Please help me to take those times as an opportunity to get some rest.

I ask that You would soothe him/her tonight, and allow for him/her to sleep through the night.

Please bless me with a good night’s rest, for both baby and me.

In Jesus’ name, amen.

A Prayer For Strength

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”

Though being a new parent comes with a lot of joyous moments, it also requires daily strength.

You may not always be able to sneak in a nap, or get a full 8 hours of sleep during the night.

On days where you have had a rough night, and you are needing strength to carry on, God calls you to take a moment to sit before Him.

In His presence we can find rest and strength for the day. Even if it is 5 minutes, seeking God for rest and strength when you are weary makes the world’s difference.

Father,

Today I am leaning on You for strength. Please help me make it through the day ahead.

I am feeling exhausted, and I don’t know how I am going to make it through this day.

I ask that You would please strengthen me with Your supernatural power. Please give me endurance and stamina.

It will be tough to get any sleep in, so I am completely dependent on You for strength.

Please help me to find endurance, and to see to my baby’s needs.

Help me to trust in You and confide in You.

May my spirit find rest and be strengthened.

In my weakness, I ask that You carry me through.

In Jesus’ name, amen.

A Prayer For Wisdom

James 1:5

“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.”

As a new parent, you will learn to do many things.

You may not get it all right on the first try (no one does), parenting will take a lot of trial and error.

But remember that practice makes progress.

If you are looking for guidance, God’s word says that those who are in need of wisdom should ask Him.

God is wise, and when we seek Him and trust Him in our parenting, He will grant us wisdom, and give us guidance.

Lord,

Thank You for the gift of parenting. I admit, most days it feels like I don’t know what I am doing.

I am figuring it out one day at a time. I am thankful that I can turn to You, not only as my God but as my Father.

Thank You for the example that You have set for us as a parent.

I ask that You would grant me wisdom as I navigate this new season in my life.

Please show me how to raise my child, and help grant me understanding in times when I don’t know what to do.

In Jesus’ name, amen.

A Prayer For Your Support System

Galatians 6:2

“Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.”

It’s true that it takes a village to raise a child.

When you are a new parent, it is especially important to have people around you who can support you.

If you have people around you, that is a blessing. And if you are feeling a little isolated, know that you’re not alone.

You can ask God in prayer to bring other parents, or friends in your life who will be able to do life with you, and help you as you navigate parenting.

Having someone to turn to for advice, to babysit when needed, or to help around the house is always a blessing.

Lord,

I am so grateful that I get to talk to You at any time.

As I reflect on life as a new parent, I realize that it is hard to do this alone.

I know that You have not meant for us to do this by ourselves, but that You have created us to be in community.

Thank You for the people that You have placed in my life who have already been such a great support.

I ask that You would lead us to others who are going through what we are experiencing, or who have been where we are.

Help us to connect with people who will guide us, and be there for us in good times and tough times.

May we be surrounded by a strong support system, who look out for our and our baby’s best interest.

In Jesus’ name, amen.

A Prayer For Grace As You Learn

Hebrews 4:16

“Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.”

Every new parent has to start from scratch.

There is nothing that prepares you for parenting like parenting.

It is simply an experience that has to be undertaken in order to truly learn.

As you learn you will need to have plenty of grace for yourself because it will be tough sometimes.

You may do the wrong thing, or say the wrong thing, or have to change a certain way that you have been parenting.

You can find grace for those times.

No one is a perfect parent, except God.

Seek His face, and find rest in His grace.

God, I pray for my friend, (this new mother).

Protect her from self-criticism as the enemy preys on her sleep-deprived mind and body.

Give her confidence in her abilities to be the best person to care for her baby because she is the one you handpicked for that very special job.

Don’t let her beat herself up if her baby isn’t taking to a schedule or feeding as well as her friend’s babies.

Encourage her heart to know that she is doing her best and that is enough. Help her not compare her chapter one to someone else’s chapter six.

A Prayer to Grow In Love

Isaiah 54:10

“Though the mountains be shaken
    and the hills be removed,
yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken
nor my covenant of peace be removed,”
says the Lord, who has compassion on you.”

When you become a new parent, your heart stretches in a way that you never thought possible.

This little person absolutely enlarges your heart, and shows you a special kind of love.

Now, imagine that the love you feel for your child is only a fraction of the kind of love that God has towards you, and your little one.

Becoming a parent truly teaches you about God’s love in a way that nothing else can.

Dear Lord,

I am amazed by the love that I feel for this baby.

You don’t truly realize just how much your heart can expand and grow in love for another human until you become a parent.

Thank You for giving me the honor to be a parent, and to raise this baby. It really has reminded me of the love with which You have loved us.

Even while we were sinners.

Thank You so much for the love that I get to share with my child. But even more than that, thank You for the love that You show towards us.

I ask that You would help me to grow even more in love towards You and towards those around me. In Jesus’ name, amen.

No matter what you face as a new parent, remember that God is always with You. He is only a prayer away, and desires to lead You and fill You as you walk this new road.
