Prayer for a New Relationship
Prayer for Good Communication
Father,
I know that there are a lot of components to a good relationship. But the one thing it all comes down to is communication.
As two people from different backgrounds, I know that we may have two very different ways of communicating, and showing understanding.
I ask that You would help us to learn to communicate well with one another.
May we know when to give an encouraging word, and when to show concern.
Help us to take one another’s ways of being into consideration, and not only think of ourselves and how we would like to be treated.
Help us be honest about our needs, and any expectations that are set.
May we learn to talk through things, and be patient listeners and gracious in our responses.
I ask that You would bless us with wisdom in the decisions that lie ahead, and enfold us with Your love.
In Jesus’ name, I pray, amen.
Prayer for Purity
Lord,
I am thankful for love. This new relationship comes with many exciting parts that I look forward to, and things that I am afraid of.
I know that there will be times when either or both of us feel tempted to do things that we’re not supposed to do.
I ask that You guard both of our hearts and minds as we grow in love, and intimacy with one another.
Please help us to not only honor one another but to honor You through our relationship.
Help us to remain pure in thought and deed. Keep us from depending on our own strength and wisdom.
Instead, help us to avoid situations that may compromise our purity, and that will make it harder to fight against our flesh.
Give us the strength to flee from temptation when it arises, and to give one another space when we need it.
Help us to keep our minds and hearts on Your truth, and to seek Your glory above our own fleshly desires.
In Jesus’ name, amen.
Prayer for Guidance
Heavenly Father,
A new relationship can be daunting. There are so many questions swirling in my mind as to where this will go, and how it will end up.
But I know that my anxious thoughts won’t get me anywhere. You already know the future, and You know whether this relationship will lead to marriage.
Knowing this truth, I come to You, just surrendering this new relationship.
I ask that You guide our every step. If this relationship is Your will for us, I ask that You would give us both peace.
I know we will face challenges, and the initial infatuation will wear off with time. When that time comes, I ask that You would help us to show grace toward one another.
Please set the pace for this relationship. I don’t want to run ahead of You, or do this without You.
Please give us wisdom, and lead us to Your will for us.
In Jesus’ name, amen.
Prayer for a Christ-Centered Relationship
Dear God,
I don’t want to pursue a relationship if You aren’t in it. I know that a house that isn’t built on a firm foundation will fall.
That is why I ask that You would help us to build our new relationship with You as our foundation.
Remind us that we have a much greater purpose to serve on this earth than fulfilling our own desires. It is all about You.
I ask that You would help this ring true in our personal lives, and in our relationships.
May we be intentional in spending time together in Your word, and praying together. Help us to seek Your will for our lives and our relationships.
May You be our compass, and not the world and the things of the world.
Help us to model our relationship according to Your word, and what is pleasing to You.
May our relationship be a light to those around us, and an encouragement to those who desire a godly relationship.
Help us to turn to You for strength, and to find the support that we need for each stage that we go through.
In Jesus’ name, amen.
Prayer for Intentionally
Father,
Thank You for the gift of a relationship. When You created us, You made us to be relational people.
And You’ve made relationships to be intentional and meaningful, not simply transactional.
As this new relationship grows, I ask that You would help us both to be intentional and view it with a sober mind.
Help us to put aside any motives that are simply self-seeking and that have no intention of pursuing something real and meaningful.
Please help us to put thought into the way we spend our time together. Help us to be cautious but yet to be vulnerable.
As we share our lives, I ask that You would help us both to guard our hearts.
May our time spent together help us get to know one another better, and reveal what our priorities and goals are.
If it is Your will for us to get married one day, I ask that You would align the our priorities. Please bless our relationship.
And help us to grow in our relationship with You, that we may remain equally yoked.
In Jesus’ name, I pray, amen.
Prayer for Growth
Lord,
I am so thankful for this new relationship that You’ve brought into my life. I ask that You bless our relationship, and help us to become better through it.
Help us to encourage one another, and to lead one another towards Your truth.
I know that we are two different people with different strengths and weaknesses.
I ask that You would help us to use our strengths to become a better team.
Help us to see one another’s value and to appreciate both the ways in which You have made us similar, and the way You have made us different.
Please help us both to pursue growth in our individual spiritual and our personal lives.
And help us grow together too. Help us challenge one another in healthy ways, and grow out of our comfort zone.
Pleasure use our relationship to grow and mature us, and to draw us closer to You. In Jesus’ name, I pray, amen.
It is always a good idea to pray over your relationships, whether new or old, romantic or platonic.
As we invite God into our relationships, we get to see His work in them. These prayers for a new relationship can help when you’re at the beginning.
